Corgarff Castle
Corgarff Castle

With its distinctive star-shaped defensive wall, Corgarff Castle sits on a lonely moorland in Aberdeenshire.  It dates from the mid-16th century and was the scene of a horrific tragedy in 1571, when the tower was burned with 24 occupants inside.  Occupied by Jacobite troops during the 1715 and 1745 rebellions and later requisitioned by government forces after the Battle of Culloden in 1746, the castle served as a soldiers' barracks until 1831.

Photography by Graeme Cornwallis.
